American LaFrance, or ALF, was one of the oldest American automobile manufacturers focused on emergency and
fire apparatus. They were known for their fire engines, ladder trucks, ambulances, and rescue vehicles. Founded in 1873
by Truxton Slocum LaFrance as the LaFrance Manufacturing Company, the Company initially produced
hand-powered firefighting equipment. They would go on to build their first motorized fire apparatus in 1907.
They’ve operated in New York, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Wyoming, Wisconsin, and even Canada under
the name LaFrance-Foamite. Though they were resurrected twice in the 1990s, operations ceased in 2014. The Company
was renowned for its influence on the design of modern fire apparatus and its classic, innovative cab-forward fire truck
style.
